Things to consider during periods of extreme cold:
Conservation during peak times
At times when energy use is extremely high throughout the region, your co-op may ask members to conserve energy. These requests aim to reduce strain on the grid and/or help hold down energy costs associated with high grid demand/additional power generation.
What can you do to help? Here are few quick, easy steps you can take to save energy:
Layer up, close the blinds, and lower your thermostat a few degrees.
Perform tasks that use hot water (such as showering, diswasher, laundry) during off-peak hours
Use lower-energy options for cooking (such as the microwave or air fryer rather than the oven or electric stove).
Load Management
During these peak energy use times, Mid-Ohio Energy and our power supplier Buckeye Power may declare a "peak alert" and activate our load management system, which utilizes radio-control switches installed on appliances such as water heaters, heat pumps, and geothermal units to help reduce load. Members who volunteer to participate can receive rebates for having these switches installed.

Colder temps = more energy required maintain heat in your home
A simple point for considering your winter energy use... If it's 10 degrees outside and your inside thermostat is set to 70 degrees, keep in mind that your heating system has to work hard to make up that 60 degree difference. With the extreme cold in January, this difference has been much greater than some of our previous winters!
