YMCA’s “Splash” Program Looks to Spread the Word on Water Safety

KENTON, OH – Last year the Hardin County Family YMCA’s “Splash” program was able to bring a message of water safety to local elementary students.  In 2009, a grant from Mid-Ohio Energy Cooperative’s Community Fund will help the YMCA expand their program to educate more area youths.

A primary goal of the Splash program is to offer county children the opportunity to participate in affordable swim lessons.  A two-hour water safety program was presented to second-graders from Hardin Northern and Kenton City Schools in 2008.  In addition, the YMCA’s aquatic staff attended local elementary schools to promote safe habits in and around water.

The Hardin County YMCA expects to enroll over 100 youths in swim lessons this summer.  The six-week-long lessons include a swimmer orientation and grouping based on individual swim levels. The Community Fund grant of $1,500 will be put toward “Splash” program scholarships, instructor fees, swim belts, and additional program expenses.
